Human error, distractions, speeding, impaired driving and not fastening safety belts are some of the leading elements in road fatalities. However, teen drivers who are between 16 to 19 years of age are in the highest risk group for fatal crashes. Some other contributing factors are that young drivers do not have the experience behind the wheel, plus they make many aggressive maneuvers and lack the wisdom and driving techniques of mature drivers.
Florida has the third highest rate for fatalities involving teenage drivers, following Texas and California. In Florida, 479 people were killed by teenage drivers and 219 teenagers died, according to the latest reports by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from 2007. The study revealed that two people died for every one teenager who died.
The state of Florida is urging educators and parents to do their part and monitor teens’ driving by teaching safe driving skills and limiting their driving at night. Simple things like wearing seat belts, driving the right speed, paying attention to the road and limiting distractions can help save lives.
