June Accidents Kill Two

Separate accidents fatally injured a middle-aged man and a young girl. St. Cloud was their place of residence.

The intersection of Nova Road and Oak Shore Drive in Osceola County became the place of death for 51-year-old Steven Fox on Tuesday June 2. His SUV careened out of control and flipped just prior to 9:00 p.m. His speed at impact had approached 110 miles per hour according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

His vehicle spun in the direction of the Center Canal bridge, smacked a stop sign and then a guardrail. The accident was dramatic. "It rolled and rolled like it was a big toy," said an unidentified witness. Mr. Fox was not wearing his seatbelt and was likely dead before he hit the water in the canal, although he was transported to a local hospital in St. Cloud. Alcohol was probably involved.

In a second Osceola accident, a twelve-year-old female was killed. She'd been riding in a vehicle operated by a 14-year-old girl. The victim's name was Shauna O'Rourke. Also in the vehicle had been two additional teenaged girls, a toddler, and the victim's 25-year-old brother Daniel. 14-year-old Allison Sullivan had suddenly applied the brakes while on Absher Road east of St. Cloud at about 10:45 p.m. Prior to this accident, the vehicle had also been traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour. Sullivan's vehicle skidded and spun onto the shoulder. It crashed into a culvert and became airborne. Overturning, the car ejected the victim and her brother, neither wearing seat belts.

The demise of young Shauna O'Rourke was confirmed shortly thereafter at Arnold Palmer Hospital. Daniel O'Rourke was injured seriously and was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center. All of the people in the car were from St. Cloud. Never licensed to operate a motor vehicle, Daniel O'Rourke had been caught driving without one in 2004. Arrested on several occasions, he'd been convicted of a felony drug charge in April 2009.
